Review: Cress by Marissa Meyer

Cress

Author: Marissa Meyer
Release: February 4th 2014
Genre: Science Fiction, Dystopia, Retellings, YA
#3 in the Lunar Chronicles
Series: Cinder (#1), Scarlet (#2), Winter (#4)

Plot:

Rapunzel’s tower is a satellite. She can’t let down her hair—or her guard.

In this third book in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles series, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.

Their best hope lies with Cress, who has been trapped on a satellite since childhood with only her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker—unfortunately, she’s just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.

When a daring rescue goes awry, the group is separated. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a high price. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing stop her marriage to Emperor Kai. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only ones who can.

Review:

I think Marissa Meyer has made it her personal mission to trash my heart completely. Rip it out of my chest, tear it in a million tiny pieces and scatter them like confetti. Seems about right.

This book was simply amazing. Mindblowingly amazing. Winter is now one of my most anticipated books of 2015 and I really hope it'll come out soon. I know it probably won't be early 2015, since her Alice in Wonderland retelling is going to come out before Winter, and also 2015, and I doubt she'll publish two books in the span of three months. So, Winter'll probably be released in Summer or something like that. Maybe Spring.

Ah, but let's talk about Cress. The book, I'll come to the character herself later. I don't think I'll have to spell it out, but, just for completion's sake: There was a lot happening, so much plot, so much action, my poor, poor heart almost couldn't take it all in. There was plot twist after plot twist thrown at us, all mixed in with some very nice, cute and funny scenes and — OF COURSE — a lot of heartbreaking ones as well. There is one especially, shared in a lab between two men, that almost made me tear up. I'm still a little in denial over that, because I simply can't believe it. Which would also be an appropiate adjective for the whole novel itself: Unbelievable.

Now, onto the characters. I think I have never loved Cinder more than I do now, she grows so much during this one, having been united with allies that share the same cause as her, and subsequently being separated from her friends, having to deal with all the stress that comes from that alone, and on top of that the pressure of having so much responsibility — for her friends and their safety, and not to forget for the whole galaxy — and her admitting that she's actually scared broke something inside of me. I am so sympathetic towards her, and I think her humanity in all of this is so astounding. Meyer just manages to make all of her character stand out in their own distinctive ways, and with so many characters around, I think that is a true show of her vast skills. I have a mighty respect for this lady.

Also, I am so so sorry that it took me almost three books to notice how great Kai really is. I mean, I've always quite liked him and such, but I only ever now realized that he's a really amazing character. He, too, has so many responsibilities resting on his shoulders, he can't possibly deal with every single one, and it's been so hard on me having to watch him struggle to make all of these hard, impossible decisions. But in spite of all that, he's still such a nice and funny guy, awkward and just ... adorable. He is goodness incarnate, literally.

All of the other "old" characters are still kicking it too, Scarlet is more badass than ever (seriously, that girl is so awesome, she's definitely my favorite of them all), Wolf is getting a bit more depth to him since he's dealing with some sad stuff, Thorne is getting HELLO A LOT OF depth to him, since he's now a very prominent character because of the introduction of Cress. I liked getting to know more about him and his past, and it was amazing seeing him develop so incredibly much over the novel. And then we have Iko, who I would never have guessed I would end up loving this much, but I do — she's getting more awesome with every passing page.

But now, onto Cress. We get to know her as a very naive, silly and socially awkward Lunar girl, and her idolizing romance and having this very weird stalker crush on Thorne immediately made me scrunch up my nose. And I hoped. Hoped that this couldn't be it, a stupid girl, a hopeless romantic that thinks love makes the world go round. No. Please no. But at first she was. And she wasn't. She's a paradox — I was supposed to dislike her, prepared to, but ... she sneaked into my heart anyway, damn her. I don't know what exactly it is, maybe it's those traits I've listed that I thought I would hate but just made her extremely adorable, or maybe it's that despite being locked up for seven years, she still finds the strength to be optimistic and to see beauty wherever she looks. To hold onto what she believes, even if proven wrong. Or maybe it's just her social awkwardness that made me warm up to her — whatever it is, I was fond of her from the beginning on, and throughout the whole novel my heart melted and I thawed. Cress is a lovely young lady and I really love her now. She's already come so far in terms of character development, I can't wait to see her develop even more.

And we even got a little glimpse of the next girl that's (probably) going to join our ragtag group of characters: Princess Winter. So far, she's not looking that great, but I'm definitely intrigued. She seems like she would be a very unique and interesting character, a trope I've rarely seen in YA: the mad girl. But we'll see, I guess.

The writing was very nice again, as was expected. It can often be confusing to be following multiple POVs, but it's really no big deal at all in these books, especially if they all tie up eventually, and very nicely if I might say so. The 3rd person narrative doesn't put any distance to the story and I simply enjoy Meyer's writing a lot. It's not overly pretty, but not down to the point as well, her descriptions are vivid and beautiful, but she's leaving out any unnecessities. I approve.

What else can I say? I think that's it, mostly. I'm truly blown away by how good this series is, especially considering that Meyer is (or, well, was) a debut author and she's already so great with her first four books. I can't imagine how uber she'll be once she has even more experience. I can't wait to have Winter blow my mind again, one final time. It'll be sad, but awesome: so basically, like the books themselves.

  1. I heard Winter will be out winter of 2015. That's like 22 months. Let me just DIE over here. And I had no idea she had another book coming out. I'm really bad at keeping up with this book news stuff. xD

I love how I know exactly what scenes you're talking about. <3 But I mean, this book was literally so perfect; I can't describe my feelings for it right now, because I might cry.

I agree with you completely. The ending with Cinder and her being scared...oh my gosh. It was so emotional.

Okay, I have to admit that Wolf is kind of freaking me out. I love him and all, because he's a big fur ball of amazing, but the fact that his mind can be controlled and he can attack his friends at any moment makes me very wary of him. I'm still sorting out my feelings regarding Wolf.

DUDE THRONE CAN I JUST SWOON, BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO WHEN IT COMES TO HIM. THE ENDING. WITH CRESS. AND THE BATTLE. AND HIM. AND CRESS. AND THE ENDING. I apologize for my outburst of feels.

I love Iko too <3 Especially when she was talking to the other escort-droids.

I thought it was adorable how Cress thought the Saharan desert was beautiful, hahaha. And yeah, Princess Winter is freaking me out. I mean, "The palace walls are bleeding red." Like, okay... Who got you your crazy pills this morning? Your step-mother Levana? .__. (I don't remember Snow White being...like that.)

Let's just say that Winter will be an experience for me.

(Once again: sorry for the very scattered comment. I only organize my thoughts in eassys. Speaking of essays...Google Drive hates me. I will Skype you the link. Which also brings up, WHEN ARE YOU EVEN ON SKYPE? I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE TIME DIFFERENCE.)

    2. FEBRUARY? But... it said that Heartless will come out BEFORE Winter (doesn't say that anymore now, though), and also in 2015... Hm, we'll see. I don't want to get too hopeful, only to have my hopes crushed. xD

Dude, I love Dr Erland so much and I was so happy for him for having found his daughter at least, but then ... I just ... Why, Marissa Meyer? WHY?!

Yeah, I still don't know what to think about Wolf. I absolutely loved him in Scarlet, and I still think he's amazing, but he didn't really do much except be controlled and hurt his friends in the process in Cress. I hope he'll be kicking ass once more in Winter. :3

YES I KNOW! THORNE AND CRESS ARE JUST SO ADORABLE AND ASJAKDJAS!
I am SO intrigued by Winter, dude. Something broke in me when she said she's crazy because she hasn't used her Lunar gift in years. That poor girl ... and when she was like, "I know I'm crazy" oh god. I'm still wary of her, but I also already kind of love her. xD

(YEAH I KNOW. So far, I haven't really been on Skype much, since I'm usually always reading in the evenings! I'll try to come on soon though. :33)

    3. Omg, same here, but you know. It'd be awesome if Winter comes out next February! To be honest, the hype is already dying for me. I've come to terms that Winter is a year away. D:

Lol, he was sketchy to me! I don't know. I just felt like he was betraying them or something (you know, then we find out that it wasn't Dr. Erland betraying them .____.).

I feel like Wolf didn't do much of anything in Cress, you know? You're right; he just sort of brooded in Cress. In Scarlet at least he took control. (Oh my god, when he said, "She's my alpha," to Cress, I died. I died. I fucking died. It was SO SAD.)

I SHIP THEM SO HARD. I SHIP EVERYBODY IN THAT SERIES. I JUST. OH MY GOD. I SHIP THEM ALL.
Ahh, I don't know what to think of her! I don't know anything about her other than, oh, yeah, she's cray cray. But I'm so excited to find out more about her, you know? I just...can't wait.

Haha, I don't understand the time differences though! Okay, I just Googled it, and it seems to be 9 hours, since Google says it's 9 pm for you. I'll try to get up at 8-9 in the morning or something so you can come online around 6 pm xD Jeez, it's easier for Lindsay and I because she's only three hours ahead, lol.

  2. Yup, you know on sequels, there's always that people that are like "A YEAR? Are you kidding me?" and I'm sitting here like ... what did you expect?... A year is usual the span between a book and its sequel, if not even more. So, I've kind of come to terms with the fact that I'll always have to wait at least a year for a sequel. Sad but true. :_:

Why?! I didn't really trust Dr Erland much in Cinder, but ever since the last third of Cinder, I loved him. I don't know, but I really sympathized with him, even if he did do bad things. Poor him didn't deserve the fate he got. :(

He definitely didn't do much. Reading the novel, I didn't really notice it much, but now... reflecting... yeah, he only sat around brooding. Huh. OH MAN. WHY'D YOU HAVE TO BRING THAT UP? RIGHT IN THE FEELS, MAN. RIGHT IN THE FEELS.

I KNOW RIGHT. It's so surprising, seeing that this is a series with so many characters and so many relationships, so surely, SURELY I wouldn't fall in love with EVERY ONE OF THEM. Right? But no... I fear I just did. How this is even possible, for me to love all the characters and ship all the ships ... mind = blown.

It's currently a quarter to 11, and I'll head to bed now. After finishing replying to your comments. xD I just wanted to get my review for Uninvited out there, having just finished it. I don't know why, but I just have to instantly write reviews after finishing the books. I don't want to wait, although that would probably be the more sensible choice. Think it over, see if I didn't just impulsively like it and then it turns out to not actually be as good as I thought it was. It happens sometimes, which is why it's not so rare that I do go back and change my ratings after a few days... but I can't help it. We'll work it out, somehow. At least around the weekends, since I'm sure I could probably sacrifice some of my reading time and go online in the evening. :3

    1. Especially when it's a book that I really want to read. :3

Haha, I don't know why. xD I just found him weird. I felt bad for him when he saw Cress though. :( But it's not like I didn't like him. He just wasn't my favorite.

HAHAH, SORRY. NOT REALLY. BUT SORRY. He didn't though! He just sort of sat around and...sulked. You know? He was all, "Oh my god Scarlettttt where is sheeee?" It's like, "Man, Cinder told you already. She's on Lunar. GET OVER IT. DON'T BE SO NEGATIVE." Yeah. Sorry. xD

I ship it like FedEx. (I saw this on Utterly Bookish, and this is my new favorite phrase.) Seriously though. I think Marissa Meyer just made it on my favorite author list. Honestly, it's not very hard to get on this list, though. :3 I'm so easy.

It's 2 here, lol. In the afternoon. YES WE REPLY TO EACH OTHER SO MUCH. It takes me an hour to reply to all your comments every day, lol. That's sort of insane. Gah, I need to order Uninvinted. Especially after you gave it four stars. (I need to read that review now. I keep starting new conversation; I'm sorry. I'll stop. I'll just comment like a regular commenter.)

Dude, I procrastinate writing reviews so much. Because of me scheduling all my posts, it's pretty easy to wait a week to write a review. I'm avoiding the Cress review just because...well, I don't want to fangirl the entire review. That is what happened with The Indigo Spell. It shall never happen again.

Ahaha, weekends are usually difficult for me, especially with all my volleyball tournaments. xD AND NO. DON'T SACRIFICE READING TIME. DON'T DO WHAT I DO. I usually come online and tell myself I'm only going to be on for two hours, networking. But then I end up online for six hours, and just...ew. I have a problem. :3
